A Fun Behind-the-Scenes Story from Back to the Future You Might Not Know
Even after decades, Back to the Future remains one of the most iconic films of the 1980s. With the franchise recently celebrating its 40th anniversary, it’s becoming increasingly rare to discover new behind-the-scenes stories that fans haven’t heard before.
However, a fresh and surprising anecdote from the sequel has recently come to light—and it’s both fun and heartwarming.
Margarita Fridays on Set
During the production of Back to the Future Part II (1989), actress Darlene Vogel, who portrayed Leslie “Spike” O’Malley, shared a memorable experience from filming.
She revealed that the cast enjoyed “Margarita Fridays” in Michael J. Fox’s trailer. According to Vogel, Fox was incredibly kind, humble, and welcoming, helping create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere on set.
A Rarely Heard BTS Detail
While many behind-the-scenes stories about the trilogy have been widely discussed, this particular tradition had largely gone unnoticed until now.
Vogel mentioned it during a podcast interview but did not go into detail, leaving fans curious about how the gatherings worked and how long the tradition lasted.
From Short Role to Extended Experience
Originally, Vogel expected her role to last only two weeks. However, the opportunity expanded into a two-month experience, allowing her to become more involved in the project.
She had previously worked with Michael J. Fox in Bright Lights, Big City (1988), where she started as a model before being upgraded to a larger acting role.
Stunt Double Confusion and On-Set Incident
Over the years, Vogel has often been mistaken for her stunt double, Cheryl Wheeler-Dixon, who was seriously injured during the filming of the hoverboard chase scene.
In one accident, Wheeler-Dixon crashed into a solid surface instead of breakaway glass and fell from a significant height. Interestingly, even Michael J. Fox once made this mistake when they met again years later.
More Insights from Michael J. Fox
Fans have also gained additional behind-the-scenes knowledge through a book released by Fox, where he shared insights into the making of the film.
He discussed topics such as his difficulty driving the DeLorean, his involvement in shaping Marty McFly’s style, and his experience stepping into the role after another actor was replaced.
Why Fans Still Love Back to the Future
While Back to the Future is already filled with well-known trivia, stories like this highlight that there are still hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
These moments continue to remind audiences why the franchise remains a timeless classic loved by generations.
