Michael B. Jordan – The ‘Dark Horse’ for Best Actor at the 2026 Oscars
Actor Michael B. Jordan is currently a strong contender for the Best Actor Oscar 2026, thanks to his role as twin brothers in the film Sinners.
After the final round of voting by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on March 5th, film websites predicted that Michael B. Jordan was leading for Best Actor, ahead of Timothée Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio. According to Gold Derby‘s predictions, Jordan had a 57% chance of winning, while Chalamet had 29%. This change occurred after the Actors Awards on March 1st, when Jordan was announced as the winner.
The timing of Jordan’s victory is considered a decisive factor, as the Actors Awards coincided with the Oscar voting period, giving him a significant advantage. Meanwhile, Chalamet’s support declined after criticism from the ballet and opera communities.
Michael B. Jordan’s Challenging Role in Sinners
In Sinners, Michael B. Jordan plays two twin brothers with contrasting personalities. The older brother, Smoke, is calm and cautious; Stack is free-spirited, reckless, and easily tempted. When Stack becomes a vampire, Jordan portrays Smoke’s complex psychology before his decision to kill his brother.
Jordan and director Ryan Coogler have collaborated for over a decade, from Fruitvale Station (2013), the three Creed films, to Black Panther. When introduced to Sinners, Jordan was surprised when Coogler revealed he had to play two roles. Jordan added subtle details to the characters’ behavior and habits to clarify their personalities, and researched the relationships of real-life twins to enhance authenticity.
Jordan tried many methods to prepare for the role, including energy and mental exercises, focusing on the childhood traumas of each character. The role of Smoke was particularly challenging; he cried several times during filming due to the emotional weight of the story.
Collaboration with Ryan Coogler
Michael B. Jordan says his years-long relationship with Ryan Coogler has helped him understand the director’s mindset and create effectively on set. Coogler shapes the story’s vision, while Jordan focuses on portraying the character.

His time in television helped Jordan master the acting profession and prepare thoroughly for his roles. Filmmakers Peter Berg and Jason Katims advised him to create opportunities rather than wait for offers, leading to his interest in film production and story development.
